Guterres in contact with Pakistan to end the US–Iran war; UN chief praises Islamabad’s role in the June ceasefire

Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told a press conference that Guterres has been in contact with Pakistani officials to help efforts to end the conflict between the United States and Iran. Dujarric praised Pakistan’s role in the agreement signed between the US and Iran in June to halt hostilities, which he described as “a major achievement.”

According to him, re-engaging in talks would help bring the conflict between the two countries to an end — a new signal that diplomacy is returning to the center, as President Trump speaks of a “quick deal” with Tehran ahead of the midterm elections. Pakistan has played the mediator role in recent weeks: Pakistan’s interior minister visited Tehran this weekend, while Iran says its conditions for a deal have been conveyed to Washington through Qatar and Pakistan.
