If You’re Removing Your Makeup Like This, Your Skin Could Pay the Price
Removing your makeup doesn’t mean scrubbing your face until nothing is left. On the contrary, the harder you push your skin, the more you can irritate it. Dermatologists explain the best way to remove every trace of makeup without damaging your skin in the process.

Why you should remove your makeup every evening
Sleeping in makeup can leave dirt, oil and pollutants on your skin that clog pores, cause irritation and trigger breakouts. Over time, it can also accelerate signs of skin aging, such as wrinkles, loss of elasticity and more visible pores.
So even when you’re tired, removing your makeup before bed is not a step worth skipping.
Double cleansing is the most effective method
According to dermatologists, makeup removal should happen in two stages. Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to dissolve makeup, sunscreen and excess oil. Then use a gentle water-based cleanser to wash away sweat, impurities and whatever residue remains on the skin.

This method is more effective than trying to remove everything with a single product and, above all, it helps you avoid excessive rubbing.
How to remove your makeup, step by step
1. Wash your hands first.
Before touching your face, wash your hands thoroughly. This helps prevent transferring dirt and bacteria to your skin.
2. Start with a cleansing oil or micellar water.
These products help dissolve makeup and sunscreen without the need to rub hard. Makeup-removal wipes can be handy in a pinch, but they’re not the best solution for a thorough facial cleanse.

3. Don’t rub your skin.
This is especially important around the eyes, where skin is thinner and more sensitive. Use your hands or a very soft cloth and apply only light pressure. Rubbing harder doesn’t make cleansing more effective — it can cause redness and irritation.
4. Cleanse your face a second time.
After removing the makeup, use a gentle water-based cleanser — a gel, foam or lotion. The goal is to remove sweat, impurities and residue without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides can help the skin feel soft and hydrated.
5. Dry and moisturize.
Rinse your face with lukewarm water and dry it by gently patting with a clean towel — not by rubbing. Then apply a moisturizer to restore hydration.
If you have sensitive skin
In this case, less is more. Choose fragrance-free products with gentle formulas, avoid products that dry out the skin, and don’t use materials that require hard rubbing.
A soft cloth may be a better fit than constant rubbing with your fingers. And especially after a thorough cleanse, moisturizing matters to support the skin’s protective barrier.

What about eye makeup that won’t come off?
Especially with waterproof mascara, the secret is patience, not force. Apply an oil-based cleanser over the eye area and let it sit for a few moments to break down the product. Then wipe it away gently.
Don’t try to pick off stubborn mascara clumps with your fingers. For more precise cleansing you can use a cotton swab, especially along the lash line, where mascara and eyeliner residue can accumulate.
If you wear waterproof mascara, let the cleanser work for a bit, then sweep a flat cotton pad slowly in the direction of lash growth. This helps avoid breaking or losing lashes.
Mistakes to avoid
Don’t forget your hairline and jawline.
Makeup often lingers in these areas and can contribute to clogged pores and breakouts.
Don’t use fluffy round cotton pads.
They can leave fibers on the skin or on the lashes. A round, flat cotton pad is a better choice.
Don’t rush.
Let the cleansing product do its job instead of trying to force the makeup off.

Don’t rely on wipes alone.
Wipes can be useful when you have no other option, but they’re not always enough to fully remove makeup, sunscreen and other residue from the skin.
And above all, don’t rub your face.
Aggressive washing can cause redness, dryness and irritation and, instead of cleansing the skin, can damage its protective barrier.
