Rina Mujku: The Specialist Chambers will not accept the changes to the law
Journalist Rina Mujku, who has long followed closely the trial of the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army in The Hague, has said that the Specialist Chambers will not accept the proposed changes to the law governing them. She made the comment today, October 1, 2026, in a statement for Klan Kosova, on the day of the nationwide protest in Pristina in defence of the KLA.
The Democratic Party of Kosovo has sought to amend the Law on the Specialist Chambers, proposing that, when a case reaches the Supreme Court panel or the appeals stage, it be tried in Kosovo by a different judicial panel. According to the PDK, this would return part of the process to the jurisdiction of domestic institutions.
But Mujku is convinced that such an initiative is unlikely to find support in The Hague. “I think this will not be accepted in any form by the Specialist Chambers, because it would be considered by Ekaterina Trendafilova as a direct interference in the independence of the Specialist Court,” she said on Klan Kosova. Trendafilova is the President of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers.
According to the journalist, any attempt to change the legal framework in the middle of a judicial process would be interpreted as political pressure on the court. She stressed that the independence of the Specialist Chambers is a fundamental principle of their functioning and that the institution would not allow it to be undermined, not even through legislative changes approved in Pristina.
Mujku’s statement comes on a day of particular symbolic weight, as thousands of citizens gathered in the capital for the nationwide protest in defence of the KLA, demanding justice for its former leaders who are facing trial in The Hague.
