Incidents in The Hague After Verdict Against Hashim Thaçi: Crowd Climbs onto Police Vehicles

Unrest erupted in front of the Specialist Chambers building in The Hague immediately after the verdict against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army was announced. A group of Albanians had gathered near the court to follow the live announcement of the verdict.

According to footage published on social media, some of those gathered climbed onto police vehicles and struck them. Police intervened to disperse the crowd, using water cannons, while after a few moments of tension the situation calmed down.

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague sentenced Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi to 25 years in prison each in the first instance, Kadri Veseli to 18 years and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years, for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in 1998–1999. Time spent in detention will count toward the sentences.
