Jonah Hill’s ‘Cut Off’ returns to filming: after reports Warner Bros. called it ‘unreleasable,’ the cast is seen back on set
LOS ANGELES – The comedy Cut Off, Jonah Hill’s third outing as a director, has officially entered reshoots in Los Angeles, as World of Reel reports in its September 27 coverage. The film’s lead stars – Hill, Kristen Wiig and Bette Midler – have been spotted filming new scenes.
Set photos, published by Just Jared on September 24–25 and further circulated by Bootleg Betty, show the trio working in downtown Los Angeles. The images, with the actors in character costumes amid cameras and production crews, are the clearest signal yet that the studio is giving the troubled project a second chance.
The comedy follows a wealthy brother and sister, played by Hill and Wiig, who are forced for the first time to confront real life – without their parents’ financial support. The film was scheduled for theatrical release on July 17, 2026 by Warner Bros. Pictures, but was abruptly pulled from the calendar in June.
The decision came after a wave of troubling reports about the film’s future. As TheWrap wrote in June, test screenings had gone very poorly – one attendee called the film “unwatchable” – while Puck’s Matt Belloni reported that inside the studio the project was considered “unreleasable.”
A representative for Hill denied the claims, saying in June that the film was still in post-production and that the date shift reflected only that factor – not an abandonment of the project.
Principal photography on Cut Off began in late September 2025 in California. Along the way, the project underwent a significant cast change: Jennifer Lawrence was originally attached to the lead role but was later replaced by Kristen Wiig.
Alongside the lead trio, the cast also includes Nathan Lane, Adriana Barraza, Camila Cabello and Chelsea Peretti – a comic ensemble that signals the studio’s ambitions for the title.
Belloni suggested in his reporting that the film’s fate may only be decided once the Warner Bros.–Paramount deal is completed, linking the project to the studio’s broader restructuring.
For Hill, Cut Off comes at a delicate moment in his career. Since 2022, the actor withdrew from acting for anxiety reasons and focused on directing – and his latest project, this year’s Apple-produced Outcome, received highly negative reviews.
With Hill, Wiig and Midler back in front of the camera, Cut Off appears to be trying to turn June’s negative buzz into a comeback at the editing table – and perhaps, back onto the theatrical calendar.
