Kosovo joins the Inter-American Convention on Serving Criminal Sentences Abroad
The Government of Kosovo has approved in principle the initiative for Kosovo’s accession to the Inter-American Convention on Serving Criminal Sentences Abroad, as Klan Kosova reports. The decision was taken at the Government’s 3rd meeting and aims to strengthen the rule of law, international cooperation in criminal matters, and Kosovo’s international subjectivity.
“The purpose of this Convention is to further strengthen international legal cooperation in the field of the transfer of sentenced persons, so that convicted persons serve their sentences in their state of origin, in accordance with international standards and with respect for fundamental human rights,” said Justice Minister Donika Gërvalla, presenting the initiative.
She added, again according to Klan Kosova, that the initiative will contribute to expanding Kosovo’s legal cooperation, especially with Latin American states, and to creating opportunities for serving sentences closer to family and society, supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of convicted persons.
