Kurti: Communications with opposition leaders on electing the president begin today
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has said that communications for meetings with opposition leaders will begin today, in an effort to reach an agreement on electing the country’s new president.
Kurti said communications with the opposition will start immediately after his meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
He made the statement to KosovaPress, after paying homage to the former rector of the University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina”, Ejup Statovci.
“As soon as we finish the meeting we have today with the President of the European Commission, Ms Ursula von der Leyen, we will immediately begin communications for meetings with the opposition leaders, so that we are not without an Assembly on October 7, but have the new president by October 6 at the latest,” Kurti said.
Yesterday, after the Government meeting, Kurti said that new meetings and talks with the parties are necessary, stressing that Kosovo does not need further institutional instability.
“There must be meetings, talks and agreements. I have seen that it is possible — there is a path on which we can walk together,” he declared.
As for the presidential candidate, Kurti made clear that LVV continues to stand by the political agreement and Bekim Sejdiu’s candidacy.
According to Kurti, Sejdiu withdrew after six LDK MPs broke the agreement.
The constitutional deadline for electing the new president ends on October 6. If the head of state is not elected within this deadline, the country faces new elections. /Telegrafi/
