Kurti to von der Leyen: The Specialist Chambers handed down heavy sentences, but there are also mistakes that must be corrected
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti spoke about the judgment of the Specialist Chambers against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, during a joint press conference with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Kurti said that regarding the judgment there are three points that, according to him, should be emphasised at the international level.
“There are three points in this judgment that must be emphasised internationally. First, the claims about the so-called ‘Yellow House’ and organ trafficking are not even part of the indictment,” Kurti said.
According to him, the second point relates to the charges of crimes against humanity and of widespread and systematic attacks against the civilian population.
“Second, the charges of crimes against humanity and of widespread and systematic attacks against the civilian population were dismissed,” he declared.
Kurti also said that the Specialist Chambers have stressed that the KLA is not the subject of the trial.
“Third, the Specialist Chambers clearly stressed that the KLA is not on trial and that their decision in no way aims to undermine the justice or the legitimacy of the liberation war,” the prime minister said.
Nevertheless, Kurti said the judgment also contains other conclusions and heavy sentences, which he claimed contain factual, historical and legal mistakes.
“At the same time we have other conclusions and heavy sentences. We believe they contain factual, historical and legal mistakes, and we expect these to be corrected on Appeal,” Kurti said.
He stressed that justice must be impartial and be perceived as such, demanding justice for all victims of the war in Kosovo.
“Around 20,000 victims of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo, and many perpetrators have not been punished. Kosovo demands justice for every victim, for every crime and for every perpetrator,” Kurti said.
Finally, the prime minister declared that, according to him, there must be no equalisation of responsibilities through the creation of alternative narratives.
“We cannot allow an equalisation of responsibility and guilt because someone wants to create alternative narratives,” Kurti concluded. /Telegrafi/
