Kurti: We have six more days to elect a president, new elections can be avoided
Prime Minister Albin Kurti has called for an agreement to be reached on electing the president of Kosovo, after the Constitutional Court’s judgment that set a new norm regarding the deadline for electing the president, as Telegrafi reports.
Kurti said the Constitutional Court’s decision has placed the country before an urgent situation and requires immediate action.
“The judgment of the Constitutional Court, which produced a new constitutional norm regarding the running of the deadline for electing the president, puts us before an urgent situation for action,” Kurti declared.
He also mentioned the earlier agreement with the LDK, saying it was violated by six of that party’s MPs.
“We have an agreement with the LDK, but we know that it was violated and abandoned by six of its MPs, despite having the blessing of their party’s presidency,” Kurti said.
According to him, the Assembly still has six full days left to elect the country’s new president.
“Before us, besides today, we also have six full days to give the country a new president,” he said.
Kurti assessed that, besides reaching a new political agreement, electing the president is still possible and that this would make it possible to avoid new elections.
“Besides reaching a new agreement, electing the president is also possible. Consequently, repeated, unnecessary and costly elections are in any case avoidable,” Kurti declared.
He called on the political parties to sit down and discuss a solution.
“So let us sit down together, because new elections again would not be elections for president. Besides leaving us without an Assembly, this time they would also leave us with uncertainty over the exercising of the president’s office, and the Government would remain in office in a caretaker capacity,” Kurti said.
Kurti stressed that Kosovo, in his view, has no time for new political crises.
“Kosovo does not have the luxury of losing time in unnecessary crises,” he said.
Finally, Kurti said the new circumstances require greater state responsibility and warned that new elections would not necessarily produce a different result.
“Every electoral process is a new context on which we must reflect, and this time no different result would be produced. But we have the new circumstances that require greater state responsibility,” he said.
Kurti added that in the current circumstances the state should not face the threat of new elections.
