Kyiv – Ukrainian forces retake territory in the east in Donetsk counteroffensive
KYIV, October 1 /ATSH-DPA/ – Ukrainian forces retook territory in the Donetsk region during September, as part of a counteroffensive aimed at pushing the front line away from the strategic cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
The operation, codenamed ‘Vivaldi’, began in early September in the Lyman direction.
According to the reported data, Ukrainian forces made significant advances in the area north and south of the city. The ISW reported on September 22 that Ukraine had liberated at least 125 square kilometres north of Lyman during the operation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the troops near Lyman, while fighting in this sector continues. According to the ISW, the Ukrainian advances thwarted a Russian attempt to encircle the fortified Donetsk area from the north.
At the same time, Russian forces continued offensive operations in other sectors of the front, while the territorial situation remains dynamic and the parties’ claims are not always independently confirmed. The ISW stresses that its maps are based only on advances that can be assessed from the available data.
