Leading AI and Tech Firms Sign ‘Morally Binding’ Deal on ‘Self-Policing’ After Meeting With Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump said he and a large group of leaders of artificial intelligence companies signed a voluntary agreement on Tuesday that will involve “internal and external reviews” — during a meeting aimed at addressing Americans’ fears about the technology and its risks to humanity.

“I think I am seeing tremendous self-policing. And they understand that they have to police themselves,” Trump told reporters during an impromptu press conference outside the West Wing, foreign media report, as Telegrafi reports.

Trump and U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson met at the White House with top executives from leading technology and artificial intelligence firms, which are spending hundreds of billions of dollars to build AI infrastructure, including data centers in communities across the country, which have sparked opposition from both parties.

The agreement was signed by Trump, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, X and xAI — now part of SpaceX.

The agreement, which Trump posted on his social media site, Truth Social, late on Tuesday, opened the door to future regulation, but focused on four voluntary steps companies should take.

It said companies would implement “strong internal controls,” work with an “independent external auditor” to assess whether the controls are working, and create a committee within each company’s board of directors to evaluate reports from internal and external auditors.

“Over time, it may make sense to codify these steps into laws and regulations,” the agreement says.

Trump repeatedly praised the business leaders for developing a technology he said would produce “incredible growth.”

Trump suggested that about 10 people would be appointed to a committee to “oversee the whole enterprise” and said the agreement would be “morally binding.”

He also said he would appoint someone to oversee the agreement in the coming days, after consulting with the industry.

According to media reports, some of the actions outlined in the agreement are measures these companies are already taking in some form or have previously pledged to take.
