Majko after the Specialist Chambers’ verdict: Where did we go wrong?
Pandeli Majko, Albania’s prime minister at the time of the Kosovo war, reacted to the Specialist Chambers’ verdict in The Hague against the former KLA leaders by asking “Where did we go wrong?”, expressing the view that the reflection on where we went wrong must be collective today.
“After the announcement of The Hague’s decisions convicting the KLA leaders of ‘war crimes,’ a reflection begins which is blocked by the question ‘Where did we go wrong?’…
The recent convictions in The Hague have turned Albanian politics into a graveyard of ambitions!
The presence of politicians today resembles the resigned explanation that ‘…in the end, I could do nothing, except be present!’
In such moments, people invent stories to give meaning to the past… until fiction replaces truth! That is consolation, but not justification!
The first consolation is that the KLA came out clean from the trial in The Hague! The KLA is being reconsidered as a ‘good army’ but with leaders accused of war crimes!…
The crisis produced by The Hague is not only political! It will raise difficult questions from young Albanians about this legacy which is being legalized in The Hague!
The answers not given today will be understood tomorrow!” Majko wrote on Facebook.
According to him, the “war crimes” for which the KLA leaders are accused are mostly from the post-war period, after the signing of the Kumanovo agreement, where the remaining Yugoslavia signed its defeat in the war!
He adds that the “war crimes” are part of the political battles over who would lead Kosovo after the war!
“In the ‘war crimes,’ the testimonies of Serbia’s spies were packaged together with those who clashed politically with the former KLA leaders, mostly AFTER THE WAR!
In the ‘war crimes,’ corruption charges against former KLA leaders AFTER THE WAR were intertwined!
Those who assess that justice has been served with The Hague’s judgment declaring Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi ‘war criminals’ have an error in interpretation!
Serbia, as the most active actor of the Hague court for the punishment of Albanians, is not interested in what happened AFTER THE WAR! It seeks a substantial justification for the meaning of its state crimes against Albanians!
Serbs are a nation educated with narcissism! Serbia wants to win the lost WAR in history books!
The ‘war crimes’ verdict for Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi is enough for a ‘rematch’ in the battle of written history!
Note that the maximum sentences are for Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi, who were the most public faces of the KLA during the war!
Pride in the history of Albanians since Skanderbeg has no leading faces! Everyone has a ‘tail’ of accusations of treason or dictators!
This is part of the Albanian drama and the deformation that their geopolitical opponents have incited! But it is also a consequence of the unlimited passion and ego of the leaders of a nation with a modest state history!
The distortions to treat Albanians as a failed nation belong to a historical technique that is not written but implied!
Serbian wars begin in books to continue in reality! The Hague decision was important for the new ‘book’ of Serbia’s RETURN to Kosovo…
So today, the reflection on WHERE WE WENT WRONG must be collective!
The hardest question is WHY in The Hague we lost the battle with Serbia? The answer that we were ‘betrayed’… is only consolation!” Majko wrote.
