Mine collapses in Turkey, five people lose their lives

Five workers lost their lives after a mine collapsed in Turkey. The incident was recorded in Soma, Manisa province.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency, AFAD, a total of seven miners were pulled from the mine, two of them alive. One of the survivors is still in hospital, while the second has been released from hospital.

The Manisa Governorate had earlier announced the identification of three of the dead and the completion of investigations, before AFAD announced the final toll of five victims.

After the collapse, a crisis management centre was created under the coordination of the Manisa Governorate authorities, which announced the immediate mobilisation of the competent services.

Condolences were expressed by the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Numan Kurtulmuş, ministers, and representatives of the presidency and the ruling party. Family Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş said psychosocial support teams are at the mine and at the hospital, alongside the workers and their families.
