MoMA announces the first major Eva Hesse retrospective in two decades: “Eva Hesse: Wild Space, 1957–1970” opens on May 30, 2027

New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has announced that it will open the first major retrospective of Eva Hesse in the United States in over two decades, as The Art Insider reports. The exhibition, titled “Eva Hesse: Wild Space, 1957–1970”, will be open from May 30 to September 25, 2027 and will bring together more than 150 works covering the peak of the artist’s career.

The last major exhibition of Hesse in the country was the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art retrospective in 2002. The curator of the new exhibition, Lanka Tattersall, told the media that younger generations of artists know Hesse mainly from books or from a single sculpture, without having had the opportunity to follow the interplay between her works on paper and her sculptures — and that her experimental freedom can encourage future artists to be daring with materials and forms.

Eva Hesse was born in Hamburg in 1936 and her family fled to New York in 1938 because of Nazi persecution. Her short career, which challenged the boundaries of minimalism, was tragically cut short in 1970, when the artist died at the age of 34 from a brain tumor.

The news has also been confirmed by other American art media, which rank the announcement among the main news of the last week of September.
