New York Islanders sign Logan Stanley to one-year contract
The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Logan Stanley to a one-year contract and made several other moves during preseason preparations. The team sent several players to the AHL and placed goaltender Vitek Vanecek on waivers for assignment purposes. As the NHL reports, 28-year-old Logan Stanley recorded 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) in 76 regular-season games last season with the Buffalo Sabres and Winnipeg Jets, including five assists in 17 games with Buffalo after the March 6 trade. He had no points in eight Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Defensemen Kashawn Aitcheson and Isaiah George and forward Cole Eiserman were sent to Hamilton of the AHL, while goaltender Vitek Vanecek was placed on waivers for assignment purposes. The Islanders will open the season at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET).
At the Buffalo Sabres, goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen left early in the third period of the 3-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the final preseason game due to a lower-body concern. Coach Lindy Ruff said “he felt something, and we took him off; lower body. We didn’t want to take risks.” Ruff added that goaltender Alex Lyon will miss several days after an upper-body injury in the 3-2 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings. Forward Jiri Kulich did not play Saturday after being held out for precautionary reasons during Thursday’s meeting; according to staff he skated Saturday and was improving. Buffalo opens the season at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday (7 p.m. ET).
The Minnesota Wild reported that defenseman Brock Faber was hit in the head by a point shot and left the ice in the 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars after the second period. He stayed briefly on the ice, got up and returned for the next shift, while coach John Hynes stressed the measures were mostly precautionary and that it was unclear whether it was anything serious. The Wild will open the season against the Nashville Predators on Thursday (8 p.m. ET). According to the NHL, these are the key moves and reports for the Islanders, Sabres and Wild as teams continue preparations for the regular season.
