Nvidia chief: AI development must move ‘as fast as we possibly can’

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has said that artificial intelligence development in the U.S. must move “as fast as we possibly can,” pushing back against growing calls within the tech industry to slow progress until stronger safety measures are developed.

Asked by CBS News whether AI development should be slowed and whether that could affect competition with China, Huang said the industry should keep moving fast, regardless of its competitors.

“We should move as fast as we possibly can, no matter who else,” Huang said in a clip published yesterday from an interview set to air tomorrow.

However, he stressed that speed should not come at the expense of safety.

“We should never, absolutely never, ship products before they are ready, offer products that are unsafe, and nobody expects us to do that. But everyone expects us to succeed and to help America be as prosperous as possible,” Huang said.

His comments place him in a different position in an increasingly intense debate within the industry over whether ever-more-advanced AI systems are advancing faster than researchers can reliably control them.

Last week, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on leading AI developers to slow the improvement of model capabilities, to give safety research and oversight mechanisms more time to catch up with the pace of development.

On the other hand, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI founder Elon Musk later expressed support for slowing down or “pacing” the development of the most advanced AI models.

Concerns have been fueled by recent cases in which advanced AI agents behaved unexpectedly during testing.
