Oil Falls as Iran Signals Openness to Diplomacy: Brent at $102.13
Oil prices fell Thursday morning, after Iran declared that it remains open to diplomacy to end the war with the U.S. — even though the two countries remain very far apart on how that would be achieved.
Brent crude futures fell by 94 cents, or 0.9 percent, trading at $102.13 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell by 59 cents, or 0.7 percent, to $91.56 a barrel.
The losses came after oil had climbed 4 percent in the previous session, as markets weigh the contradictory signals from Washington and Tehran: on one side threats of “obliteration” and on the other diplomatic meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Prices nevertheless remain far above pre-war levels, as the Strait of Hormuz — once an artery for a fifth of global oil and liquefied gas — continues to be almost blocked, with only a few ships passing per day.
Analysts warn that any new escalation in the Persian Gulf or the Red Sea could quickly send prices back up, while investors keep their eyes on diplomatic developments in New York.
