Xi in the U.S.: Trade Truce with China Extended

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the United States for his first state visit in 11 years, where he was personally greeted at Andrews Air Force Base by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump and their spouses, Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan, met on the tarmac, while the welcoming ceremony included the honor guard and a ceremonial flyover by two American B-1 bombers.

The visit comes at a crucial moment for U.S.–China trade relations. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the two countries have agreed to extend the trade truce into January, while Washington and Beijing discuss a broader economic agreement.

According to BBC material, tariffs, rare earth minerals and U.S. agricultural exports to China are expected to be in focus during the talks. Analyst David Firestein of the Bush China Foundation said the sides could aim for further trade agreements, while noting that relations appear more stable than a year ago.

Xi, in a statement published by the Chinese state agency Xinhua, said that China and the U.S. should be “partners, not rivals,” expressing expectations of results from the visit.
