Oman and Iran Discuss Hormuz Security on the Sidelines of the UN General Assembly

Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi have discussed regional developments and efforts to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, in a meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, as Al Jazeera‘s live war blog reports.

According to Oman’s Foreign Ministry, the talks focused on diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions, build trust, and address unresolved issues. The two top diplomats also discussed guaranteeing freedom of passage through the strait, to support international trade and energy supplies.

The meeting comes at a critical moment in the seven-month war: Iran has proposed a 7-day plan to the United States that foresees reopening Hormuz on day six and resuming nuclear talks on day seven, in exchange for lifting the American blockade of Iranian ports. Tehran says it awaits Washington’s response.

Oman has for years played the role of quiet mediator between Tehran and Washington — earlier meetings on Hormuz were also planned in the Omani capital before being postponed. In parallel, Qatar continues to mediate between the two sides in New York.
