PDK urges government to fast-track Specialist Chambers law to parliament
The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) has asked the government to send the draft law amending and supplementing the Law on the Kosovo Specialist Chambers to parliament for review as soon as possible. The legislative initiative has already been sent to the government for review.
The call was made by PDK parliamentary group leader Arian Tahiri, who said the government must not stall the process and that the draft law should return to parliament for review and a vote.
“The Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo must start without delay the procedures to supplement and amend the Law on the Specialist Chambers. The government of Kosovo must not dare to stall this process,” Tahiri said at a press conference, as Telegrafi reports.
He also sought institutional and financial support for the defense teams and called on political parties for what he described as maturity and responsibility in the process.
Meanwhile, PDK MP Perparim Gruda said the proposed changes do not, in his view, undermine the obligations Kosovo undertook through the constitutional amendments and the ratified agreement with the European Union.
Gruda argued that the draft law aims to create room for certain legal matters to be handled within Kosovo’s own system. He asked the government to move the initiative to parliament as soon as possible.
The call comes a day after the Kosovo Assembly adopted, with 99 votes in favor and none against, a declaration on the Specialist Chambers’ September 16 verdict against Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selim.
The draft law amending the Specialist Chambers law had been sent to the government for its opinion on September 25.
