PDK walks out of the KIA Oversight Committee, demands processing of the Law on the Specialist Chambers

MPs of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) walked out of today’s meeting of the Committee for the Oversight of the Kosovo Intelligence Agency (KIA), immediately after its constitution, demanding that the amendment of the Law on the Kosovo Specialist Chambers be processed in the Assembly as soon as possible, as KosovaPress reports.

PDK MP Besa Kabashi said that the constitution of institutions is important, but the “priority above priorities” is the Law on the Specialist Chambers. “Naturally, as the Democratic Party of Kosovo, we consider that the constitution of institutions is very important, which is why we were there. But we left this meeting after the constitution because at the moment there is no greater priority for the Republic of Kosovo than processing the amendment of the Law on the Specialist Chambers,” she said.

PDK MP Rrahman Rama also called the law a “priority above priorities”. “For us as a party, the law is the priority above priorities. And we will not take part in any committee until this law is done,” Rama declared, adding that many laws have come through various Assembly committees, but the number-one priority, according to him, remains the Law on the Specialist Chambers.

On the other hand, the committee chair, Bekë Berisha, called on MPs to contribute to overcoming the institutional deadlock, as Klan Kosova reports. “I would ask all MPs to give their contribution so that we stabilise and have regular committees and a parliament,” he said, noting that the deadline for electing the president expires on 6 October and that the country risks going to elections again.

The PDK’s withdrawal from the KIA Oversight Committee comes in the wake of the boycott of parliamentary committee meetings announced by the PDK and AAK, until the draft law amending the Law on the Specialist Chambers is processed in the Assembly.
