Protest enters its 14th night as citizens demand action from Kosovo’s institutions
In Pristina, the protest against the Specialist Chambers’ verdict on the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi, is continuing again tonight (Tuesday).
This is the 14th consecutive night that citizens have gathered in “Skanderbeg” Square, opposing the decision announced on September 16 by the Specialist Court in The Hague.
The protesters are demanding a reaction and concrete action from Kosovo’s institutions regarding the verdict, while the organisers have warned that the gatherings will continue in the coming days.
Citizens have been seen at the protest with banners and messages in support of the former KLA leaders, while the main demand remains opposition to the verdict and an institutional reaction to it.
Thaçi, Veseli, Krasniqi and Selimi were sentenced on September 16 to a total of 81 years in prison.
The verdict is not final and can be appealed, while the defence teams have announced appeals against the decision.
For its part, the Democratic Party of Kosovo has demanded changes to the law on the Specialist Chambers, linking this demand to the latest developments in The Hague and the need, according to it, for greater institutional support for the accused and the convicted.
The protests in Pristina have continued for several nights in a row, while the organisers have announced that they will keep up the public pressure until concrete steps are taken by the country’s institutions, according to Telegrafi.
