Putin’s envoy Dmitriev held “constructive” talks in Washington, with post-war U.S.-Russia energy initiatives also on the table
Monday’s meetings were aimed at “continuing constructive discussions on a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and possible U.S.-Russia energy initiatives after the end of the war,” a U.S. official said, as Reuters reports.
Dmitriev, who heads Russia’s sovereign wealth fund RDIF and acts as the Kremlin’s envoy for economic relations with the U.S., held discussions with senior American officials in the U.S. capital a day before the news became public on Tuesday.
His visit to Washington comes days after the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week in New York, where, according to reports, the possibility of a ceasefire covering energy targets was also discussed.
Earlier this month, President Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met President Putin in Moscow, placing Dmitriev’s meeting in the context of a new chain of diplomatic contacts aimed at closing the conflict that began in 2022.
Unlike last week’s meeting in New York, where Dmitriev met the U.S. envoys on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Monday’s visit to Washington represents another direct step in the dialogue between the parties on the post-war scenario, including possible energy cooperation.
