Qatar Mediates Restart of US–Iran Talks: ‘Our Officials Are Moving Between Capitals’

Qatar is actively working to restart talks between the United States and Iran, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry announced. The ministry’s spokesperson said Qatari officials are exchanging ideas and “moving between various capitals in the hope of achieving progress on this path.”

According to the spokesperson, Doha has heard assurances from US administration officials that Washington wants to reach an agreement with Tehran. “We need a regional solution that achieves stability and an international understanding that protects waterways like Hormuz,” he added.

The statements come after an Iranian official told Al Jazeera that Qatar had presented Washington’s proposal to Tehran to end the war. Iran has listed seven conditions for starting talks, including an end to the war on all fronts, the lifting of the US naval blockade, and the unfreezing of frozen assets.

Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, said the region has experienced an “earthquake” in recent months and that its consequences have called “security assumptions” into question. Qatar, he added, remains a “committed partner” for regional security, and diplomacy and economic integration are the way forward.
