Rosehip tea, the small fruit with many benefits for the body
Rosehip tea (Rosa canina), prepared from the red fruits of the plant, is a natural caffeine-free drink containing polyphenols and antioxidants, salute.eu writes.
The fruit is particularly rich in vitamin C, although the amount that remains in the tea depends on how it is dried and prepared.
Some of the possible benefits:
It strengthens antioxidant defenses – polyphenols, carotenoids and vitamin C help protect cells from oxidative stress.
It supports the immune system – vitamin C plays an important role in the normal functioning of the immune system.
It may have an anti-inflammatory effect – some compounds in rosehip, including galactolipids, have been studied for their effects on inflammation and joint pain. However, most studies have been done with extracts or powder, not just tea.
It may contribute to heart health – rosehip’s antioxidant compounds have been studied for a possible impact on cholesterol and blood pressure, but evidence specific to the tea is still limited.
It is a good drink for hydration, especially because it contains no caffeine.
How is it prepared?
A suitable method is to let the tea steep for about 6–8 minutes in hot water; studies on preparation have found that a temperature of around 84–86°C can preserve antioxidant compounds well.
Caution: in large amounts it can cause stomach discomfort, heartburn or loose stools.
People with a history of kidney stones or who take medication regularly should consult a doctor/pharmacist about frequent use.
