Von der Leyen in Tirana / Çika: She was supportive of the government, but demanding on the fight against corruption
International affairs expert Emilio Çika says European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during her visit to Tirana, gave messages supportive of the government, but was also demanding regarding the fight against corruption.
On the “Real Story” show on ABC News, Çika said the justice reform now needs intervention, adding that the legal measures presented today by the government are positive.
Çika added that there must be will for the fight against corruption.
“Here we need to see one thing: justice is something in itself, we must also express the supportive messages towards the government. She was more demanding of the government, in the fight against corruption. The way it was done, the justice reform now requires intervention; it brought out its weaknesses, it also brought out its success. Today’s steps that were presented are very positive, also with the burden of pre-trial detentions. Punishment is something else, prison is something else. Here the executive intervenes again with legal initiatives. The Achilles’ heel is a will that must be very firm from the government for the fight against corruption.
We have many cases from the justice system and few from denunciations that the state itself gives to justice. The rule of law with all its elements is very important. Perception is how we see and judge it, it is not the fact itself. We must fight this too,” he emphasized.
