Russia attacked energy facilities in the Zhytomyr region overnight, governor says
Russia attacked energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure in Ukraine’s northern Zhytomyr region on Tuesday evening and overnight, the regional governor announced on Wednesday. According to Reuters, Zhytomyr regional governor Vitalii Bunechko said energy facilities as well as food and processing sector businesses were hit.
The new attack comes at a time when Moscow is intensifying strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, ahead of winter — a strategy that is causing power outages in different parts of the country.
The Zhytomyr region lies northwest of Kyiv and has been targeted in past weeks as well, while Russian forces continue the campaign of attacks on the Ukrainian energy grid.
Ukrainian officials have described the campaign of attacks on energy as an attempt to wear down Ukraine’s air defence and to leave the country without power before the cold season.
