“Skampa” festival opens its 28th edition with “Medea” by the Izmir State Theatre

The 28th edition of the “Skampa” International Theatre Festival opened with the play “Medea” by the Turkish theatre troupe.

The festival is considered one of Elbasan’s most important cultural events, bringing theatre troupes from Albania and the world to this city.

Euripides’ masterpiece from the Izmir State Theatre, directed by Adonis Filipi. Through a powerful directorial concept and a performance dense with emotion, “Medea” brings to the stage the story of a betrayed woman whose passion and pain turn into revenge. Movement, rhythm and stage images intertwine in a production that has been part of the Turkish theatre’s repertoire for six years.

The role of Medea was performed by actress Asli Kilian, bringing to life a powerful and complex character in one of the best-known works of world dramaturgy.

For 28 years, the “Skampa” International Theatre Festival has become an important tradition in Elbasan’s cultural life, placing the city in the focus of the Albanian and international theatre scene. This year’s edition is held under the motto “To Be,” a message linked to presence, coexistence and the power of art to unite people across borders.

As part of the festival, Elbasan will welcome theatre troupes from Albania, North Macedonia, Italy, Tunisia, the United States of America, Moldova and Turkey, which will bring 10 performances, alongside a rich programme of performances, workshops, exhibitions and book promotions.

In his greeting for the opening of the festival, the Mayor of Elbasan, Gledian Llatja, praised “Skampa’s” 28-year tradition and its role in the city’s cultural life. Llatja stressed that Elbasan has been and remains a city that loves theatre, values the artist and warmly welcomes the stage and culture.

The “Skampa” International Theatre Festival will continue until October 5.
