Tesla wins approval for FSD supervised driving in Croatia — rollout to start soon

Tesla announced on Tuesday that its supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) system has been approved in Croatia, where a nationwide rollout is expected to begin soon, Reuters reports.

Croatia joins a growing list of European countries that have approved the technology. The Dutch regulator RDW approved the system in April, with Belgium and several other countries following; neighboring Slovenia also approved it earlier this month, according to Reuters.

The approval comes at a delicate moment: the RDW has also proposed that the software be approved at the level of the entire European Union, but a safety group and several member states have raised concerns about the system’s ability to exceed speed limits — a debate that is making the European expansion of FSD one of the hottest issues in the auto industry right now.

An EU-wide approval would require the support of a “qualified majority” of 15 of the 27 member states, representing 65% of the population. An expected vote on bloc-level rollout was postponed from October, and the next opportunity does not appear to be before December.

For Tesla, the European expansion of FSD is, according to the company itself, essential to boosting sales and regaining market share against growing competition from Chinese electric car makers, Reuters reports.
