The biggest question every NBA team must answer as training camp opens

NBA teams are opening training camps for the 2026–27 season, and each arrives with one fundamental problem to answer before the regular-season games begin. Some dilemmas are clear right now, while others will require on-court testing to be revealed.

As Bleacher Report reports, for some clubs the question is clearly defined — such as the offensive order in Philadelphia or the outside shooting efficiency in Miami — while for others the search must go deeper to understand shortcomings and opportunities.

Atlanta wonders whether its excellent defense can be complemented by an offense strong enough to make it a title contender. After the departure of Trae Young, the team showed top-five level defense, and the addition of Lu Dort should reinforce it, but offensive output remains a challenge, with questions about Jalen Johnson’s progress and CJ McCollum’s role in his 35-year-old season.

Boston made a major trade, sending Jaylen Brown out for Paul George and several draft picks, and is now weighing expectations for the season without that teammate: will Jayson Tatum be enough as the main leader, especially 16 months after his Achilles tendon injury?

Brooklyn is focused on developing young guards Egor Dëmin and Mikel Brown Jr.; if they make the expected leap, they could make the team’s previously assembled combination with players like Michael Porter Jr. and Julius Randle have an impact. Otherwise, the Nets could consider the market for offensive forwards.

Charlotte is facing life without LaMelo Ball after the trade that changed the team’s identity. Management aims to take the Hornets to the playoffs and beyond, and there is optimism around Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller, but the new combination has yet to prove it can reach the long-term objective.

Chicago hopes the pairing of youngsters Matas Buzelis and Caleb Wilson forms a solid foundation for the rebuild. The club depends on the emergence of an exceptional talent that could change the direction of the project.

Cleveland made a big bet on Peyton Watson, hoping he can solve the small-forward gap as a defender and offensive solution; the plan’s success depends on his development on the offensive side of the game.

Dallas is examining the impact Kyrie Irving could have on Cooper Flagg’s development. Irving could simplify Flagg’s job as a creator in some situations, but the age mismatch and long-term expectations remain concerning.

Denver must improve a defense that ranked in the bottom of the league last season if it wants to be a title contender. The question is where the improvement will come from — whether from a healthier return of existing players or the contributions of new additions in key roles.

Detroit has stalled progress in negotiations with center Jalen Duren, creating uncertainty about his future and the team’s. A five-year offer worth $200 million with a weight-control clause was reported by The Athletic, but the situation remains unresolved and hampers the Pistons’ planning.

Golden State depends heavily on the health of an aging and injured group of players, and the ultimate dilemma is whether they will have enough availability to seriously compete at the tail end of Stephen Curry’s career, who has expressed a strong desire to win.

Houston lost its floor leader Fred VanVleet to a ligament injury in September and is still searching for an offensive organizer who can give the offense the harmony it needs. Even though VanVleet has returned from the injury, the question is whether he and others can reset the team’s rhythm.

Indiana depends heavily on Tyrese Haliburton’s return to a high level; his health and rhythm will determine much of the Pacers’ expectations for the coming season.

The questions mentioned above are the ones that will define the clubs’ agendas during training camp and the early part of the season — and, as the article underlines, the answers to them will determine how quickly each team can chase major success, according to Bleacher Report.
