‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’ marks the end of the David Fincher–Netflix era: the director’s 3-film deal closes
David Fincher says farewell to Netflix. According to a new Bloomberg report, cited by SlashFilm, ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’, the eagerly awaited film with Brad Pitt, will be the last film the director makes for the streaming platform — closing the 3-film deal signed in 2020.
Under that agreement, Fincher directed the biographical drama ‘Mank’ — nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director — and the thriller ‘The Killer’. The new film, written by Quentin Tarantino, closes the trilogy: it will be shown exclusively in IMAX cinemas on November 26, 2026 and will debut on Netflix on December 23.
But the farewell runs deeper than three films. As SlashFilm writes, Fincher has collaborated with Netflix since 2013: he was executive producer of ‘House of Cards’ (63 episodes, two directed by him), of ‘Mindhunter’ (19 episodes, seven directed by him), of the animated series ‘Love, Death & Robots’ and of the critics’ programme ‘Voir’, as well as producer of the documentary ‘Is That Black Enough For You?!?’.
‘It is not simply the end of a 3-film deal — it is the definitive exit of a filmmaker who has collaborated with Netflix for almost 13 years,’ the magazine notes.
Meanwhile, the film remains one of the most anticipated titles of the year-end. The events take place in 1977, eight years after Cliff Booth foiled the Manson family’s murderous plans; he is now no longer Rick Dalton’s stuntman, but a studio ‘fixer’. The cast also includes Peter Weller as Gus (Cliff’s father), Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
Where will Fincher ‘land’ after this? With his status as one of Hollywood’s most respected directors, the studios will surely welcome him with open arms.
