Former justice minister Maja Popović bought a €500,000 apartment in Vračar — it is not in her asset declaration, KRIK reveals

Maja Popović, Serbia’s former minister of justice and now a judge of the Constitutional Court, has bought an apartment in a luxury building in Belgrade’s Vračar, which does not appear in her asset file published on the website of the Agency for the Prevention of Corruption — the investigation of the investigative portal KRIK reveals, as Nova.rs reports.

According to KRIK, a residential-commercial complex with 50 apartments was built where family houses once stood; Popović bought off-plan a three-room apartment of 122 square meters, valued at half a million euros by the real estate agency engaged by KRIK.

Documents show that for the purchase she took out a loan of 150,000 euros in September last year; exactly how much she paid and where the rest of the money came from remains unknown, since Popović did not answer the journalists’ questions. When called, she said she was in a meeting and ended the call — afterwards she no longer answered calls or the questions sent, not even through the Constitutional Court’s media service.

With this purchase, the value of the Popović couple’s assets — her and her husband Rastko Popović, a judge and deputy president of the Court of Appeal in Belgrade — reaches around 1.5 million euros; last year KRIK revealed that they own five apartments, in Belgrade and in Budva.

To the Agency for the Prevention of Corruption, Popović declared in January of this year that she had become a judge of the Constitutional Court with a monthly salary of 794,000 dinars — but the apartment bought a few months earlier is not mentioned in her file, as Nova.rs notes.

Who is Maja Popović: five years at the head of the Ministry of Justice (2020–2025), where she came from the Security Information Agency (BIA), where she had worked since 2014; after her term she returned to the BIA, and in December 2025 she was elected a judge of the Constitutional Court from the list of candidates proposed by the then president Aleksandar Vučić. Her husband has delivered decisions in well-known public cases — including the acquittal of Zvonko Veselinović and Milan Radoičić over the theft of trucks taken on leasing, as Nova.rs writes.
