“The Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language” at the All-National Academic Book Fair in Tetovo

The Academy of Sciences of Albania took part in the 20th International Seminar of Albanology, organised by the University of Tetovo, promoting the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language” (FMGJSH) and participating in the All-National Academic Book Fair.

Before the seminar began, the president of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, Skënder Gjinushi, accompanied by academician Valter Memisha, Prof. Dr. Anila Kananaj and Prof. Dr. Shezai Rrokaj, was received in a meeting by the rector of the University of Tetovo, Prof. Dr. Kushtrim Mehmeti. Also present at the official reception were Deputy Minister of Education Driton Sulejmani and the seminar’s director, Prof. Dr. Berton Sulejmani, also dean of the university’s Faculty of Philology.

During the meeting, Gjinushi thanked the rector for the cooperation in carrying out the Academy’s major projects, especially the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language” and the “Albanian Encyclopaedia”. He then briefed the rector and the University of Tetovo representatives on the progress so far of the three major projects: the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language”, the “Albanian Encyclopaedia” and the “History of the Albanians”. As part of these relations, the Academy president invited the University of Tetovo rector to further cooperation in the future: in research projects, studies and joint publications.

At the opening of the plenary session, Prof. Dr. Kushtrim Mehmeti praised the opportunity to promote the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language”, stressing that there is no more important event for an albanology seminar than the presentation of a dictionary of Albanian.

On this occasion, Academy president Acad. Skënder Gjinushi presented the work done on the Academy’s major projects, emphasising institutional cooperation and its importance for achieving success in drafting the three projects.

Continuing the event, Valter Memisha, scientific secretary of the FMGJSH and co-director of the drafting project, presented the new principles and methods used in compiling this major work.

Next, the project’s deputy editor-in-chief, Prof. Dr. Shezai Rrokaj, discussed the informative and documenting function of the FMGJSH lexicon, as well as its normative function.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Anila Kananaj, the project’s coordinator, presented the online platform of the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language”, the various functions for using its wealth through the online site, and how the public — anyone interested — can use it.
