The Monastery of the Archangels in Dervician enters the first phase of restoration
At the Monastery of the Archangels in Dervician, work continues on the restoration and revitalisation of the complex, with interventions in the eastern and western lodgings, to restore its function after decades of degradation.
The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja, visited this place of worship, one of 15 monasteries that testify to the rare spiritual and cultural wealth of the Gjirokaster region. The minister inspected this first phase of the intervention, which envisages the rebuilding, restoration and conservation of the lodgings through the consolidation of the masonry.
“With the church now declared a first-category ‘Cultural Monument,’ these interventions give this historic complex a new future, as a living space for the community and a point of reference for visitors and cultural tourism in Dropull,” the head of the ministry said.
The Monastery of the Archangels is positioned on the plateau of Mali i Gjere, above the village of Dervician. The monastery is a newer construction compared with the other complexes of this valley, but it holds many values and testifies to the development and typological diversity of post-Byzantine architecture. The complex of the Monastery of the Archangels consists of the church and the lodgings that surround it, mainly on the eastern and western sides.
