Toward a new escalation in Iran? What the major new U.S. troop deployment signals

The recent deployment of 10,000 additional American troops and a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East marks a considerable expansion of the military options for the Trump administration in the war it has waged together with Israel against Iran.

With this move, the American presence will rise to over 20,000 personnel and the total regional footprint of the U.S. armed forces to approximately 35,000–50,000 members.

By the end of November, three American aircraft carriers (Roosevelt, George H.W. Bush and George Washington) and two amphibious groups will be positioned around Iran.

This rare buildup of forces, which comes shortly before the U.S. midterm elections, provides massive control of the airspace and rapid strike capabilities.

Donald Trump has said he does not rule out strikes on Iranian infrastructure if diplomacy fails. Some analysts have suggested that sending more troops to the region could be a negotiating tactic by Washington.

What forces does the U.S. already have in the Middle East?

American troops have been stationed in the Middle East for decades. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. has an extensive network of military installations in at least 19 countries. Of these, eight are permanent bases, located in Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The first deployment of American troops in the Middle East took place in July 1958, when combat troops were sent to Beirut during the Lebanon crisis. At its peak, there were nearly 15,000 marines and soldiers in the country.

As of mid-2025, there were 40,000 to 50,000 American troops across the Middle East, including personnel deployed at large permanent bases, but also at smaller structures throughout the region.

Since the beginning of 2026, Trump has increased the American military presence in the Middle East, sending warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, to the Arabian Sea.

What forces did the U.S. send before the war in Iran?

According to open-source intelligence analysts and military flight-tracking data, the U.S. has deployed more than 120 aircraft to the region since the beginning of February. This is the largest increase in American air power in the Middle East since the Iraq War in 2003.

The forces include E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, F-35 and F-22 stealth fighter jets, together with F-15 and F-16 fighters.

In March, the Pentagon ordered additional American forces to be sent to the Persian Gulf. In total, nearly 7,000 additional troops have been deployed to the Middle East since the start of the war with Iran.

At what stage are the diplomatic efforts?

Indirect peace talks between the U.S. and Iran continue without any progress.

At the talks held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month, mediated by Qatar, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz remained a difficult issue.

Last week, Iran presented a new proposal to open the Strait within seven days, demanding the lifting of sanctions, the release of Iranian assets and guarantees that the attacks would stop. However, the Trump administration rejected the proposal, with analysts saying the U.S. wants to discuss other issues, such as Iran’s nuclear program, before agreeing to any terms.
