Trump announces $200 billion in South Korean investment in the U.S.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced today that South Korea will invest up to $200 billion in strategic projects in the United States of America, mainly in the energy sector, as Reuters reported. The package is part of a broader $350 billion agreement between Washington and Seoul. Of that sum, $150 billion is earmarked for the shipbuilding sector, while $200 billion is for strategic investment in the U.S.
According to the announcement, the main projects include eight large nuclear reactors, a gas power plant in Texas and the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Alaska. About $120 billion will be used to build eight large nuclear reactors in the U.S. The project aims to increase electricity production at a time when demand is rising, especially from data centers and industry.
South Korea has also confirmed a $22.3 billion investment in a gas power plant in Texas, with a capacity of over 6 gigawatts. The plant is expected to supply energy to facilities that consume large amounts of electricity, including artificial intelligence data centers and electronic chip manufacturing factories.
Another part of the package, worth about $54 billion, will be used for the “Alaska LNG” project, which envisages building a roughly 1,300-kilometre pipeline to transport natural gas from northern Alaska to an export terminal in the south of the state. The project aims to transport about 3.9 billion cubic feet of gas per day and produce up to 20 million tonnes of LNG per year.
Trump’s announcement represents the first package of major projects to materialise from the $350 billion agreement reached between the two countries.
