Trump asks Hispanics to back Republicans and admits border policy could hurt him in the midterms
WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has asked Hispanic voters to support Republicans in November’s midterm elections, openly admitting that his strict border policy is driving them away from his party, as the New York Post reports.
The statement was made during a Hispanic Heritage Month event on Wednesday at the White House, where the president sought to win back voters who gave him a record share of their votes in the 2024 elections.
“Honestly, it’s the toughest job I’ve ever had,” Trump said of managing the border: “They’ll say you’re too tough or too soft. Be tougher, be softer. Whatever you do, you’re wrong.”
The president’s concern appears to be based on alarming figures for the White House: a September New York Times/Siena poll shows that over 65 percent of Latino Americans are dissatisfied with his performance, while 78 percent prefer Democrats to hold the majority in Congress.
Republican strategist Mike Madrid has described the president’s approach to this electorate as excessive, saying that Trump “dramatically overdid it and will pay for it politically” — a warning that falls in the same line as the president’s own public admission.
Beyond immigration policy, the economy and high fuel prices remain the main concern for Hispanic voters, a group that could decide the outcome of several key races in November’s midterm elections.
