Trump launches America.gov: the AI-powered portal promising a ‘single front door’ for the federal government

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday launched America.gov, a new portal powered by artificial intelligence that aims to become the digital “single front door” for the entire federal government. “Instead of forcing citizens to search through the endless labyrinth of tens of thousands of terrible government websites, you will now have a single front door for every question,” Trump declared during the launch ceremony, as The Wall Street Journal reports.

The project is led by Joe Gebbia, the co-founder of Airbnb and head of the National Design Studio at the White House. According to the plan, citizens will be able to renew a passport, start Medicare enrolment, book a federal campsite or check the status of a federal student loan — all in one place, with answers in plain language from two artificial intelligence agents, Grok and Gemini.

The Administrator of General Services, Edward Forst, said Version 1.0 launches on Tuesday, while full integration of some services is expected “within a few months”. The effort is not new: every US administration since Clinton’s has attempted a single federal portal, while the Obama administration estimated in 2011 that there were more than 24,000 government domains.

Scepticism is not lacking. Mikey Dickerson, the former Google engineer who fixed HealthCare.gov, says a true “one-stop shop” would require new legislation, not just code: “I hope someone notices if they promise the moon and the stars, but then come out with the same half-broken thing everyone before them has done.”

The stakes are high: the failed launch of HealthCare.gov was a lasting embarrassment for Obama, while White House officials say America.gov will be a lasting legacy of Trump. Gebbia joined the administration through Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, while the National Design Studio also launched the TrumpRx platform and the Trump Gold Card website earlier this year.
