Trump Turns Against Republican Congresswoman Salazar: “Soft” on the Border?
US President Donald Trump has publicly turned against Republican congresswoman María Elvira Salazar, representative of a Miami, Florida district, after a fierce intra-party debate over immigration policy, as the Washington Examiner reports.
It all began when Salazar published a campaign ad in which she said the Trump administration’s immigration law enforcement had “gone too far.” Trump initially responded with a soft tone, calling the congresswoman “very kind” but adding that she had “softened a bit on the border.”
A Washington Post report with interviews of Hispanic voters in Salazar’s district was then published, according to which she had misread their sentiment and many of them continued to support Trump. Trump posted a screenshot of the article on social media, highlighting the report’s findings.
The president went even further: he reposted 13 posts on platform X from users attacking Salazar, some of whom asked Trump to withdraw his endorsement or encourage a Republican challenger in the upcoming primaries.
The development comes at a sensitive moment for the congresswoman, as her race has narrowed sharply this week. The clash shows the deepening divisions among Republicans over the approach to immigration ahead of the midterm elections.
