Tsunami, the Dog Who Saved Lives After the Venezuela Earthquakes, Honored With a Statue

VENEZUELA, September 20, ATSH/ Tsunami, the Border Collie who took part in search-and-rescue operations after the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, has been honored with a statue in the city of Maracaibo.

The statue was unveiled in “Vereda del Lago” park, at a ceremony where Tsunami was present together with his trainer, Jorge Beens. The dog was also honored with the “Medal of Valor” by the Maracaibo fire service.

Tsunami took part in searches in the areas hit by the earthquakes, particularly in La Guaira, helping teams locate people under the rubble. Various sources report that he helped find dozens of people.

The dog’s name, already tied to rescue operations, took on a symbolic meaning after the disaster that struck the country, while the ceremony in Maracaibo turned into a tribute to search-and-rescue dogs and the teams that took part in the post-earthquake operations.
