European Commission will not place restrictions on Montenegro’s right of veto
The European Commission will not place restrictions on Montenegro’s right of veto after the country becomes a member of the European Union, Brussels unofficially told Vijesti Television, one day before the publication of the new roadmap for the most advanced candidate countries for membership.
As TV Vijesti reports, the European Commission in this way defends the full equality of all European Union states and will not use restrictions of this right in the case of Montenegro, which is the most likely next member.
Some analysts, but also political circles in Brussels and in the region, had predicted that Montenegro might be given a ten-year restriction on its right of veto, as a form of protection for the European Union system against possible unresolved disputes within the new members, which could endanger its stability.
Montenegro aims to close the accession negotiation process by the end of 2026 and has the objective of becoming the EU’s 28th member state in 2028; the Commission’s new roadmap is expected to provide the concrete guidelines for the final phase of this process.
