Two victims from the storms in Catalonia, Spain
Two people have lost their lives in Catalonia, Spain, while heavy rainfall and storms have swept several areas of the country.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed the victims in a post on the social network X, saying the situation is particularly serious in the areas around Barcelona. He expressed condolences to the victims’ families and called on citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and follow the authorities’ instructions.
Catalonia’s leader, Salvador Illa, also expressed regret over the two victims, while warning that the situation remains complicated because of the torrential rainfall.
The Catalan authorities are continuing their work to deal with the emergency situation across the whole region. The regional emergency service has warned of increased risk near the Ridaura and Daró rivers, in Girona, asking residents to stay away from the affected areas.
The bad weather is expected to continue in the coming days. Meteorologists have warned of intensive rainfall and potentially dangerous flooding in eastern Spain, as a result of cold air moving at altitude over warmer air masses.
