US – A congressman introduces a resolution to remove Hegseth
WASHINGTON, September 15 – US Congressman Thomas Massie introduced a resolution to remove Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, accusing him of defying Congress and unlawfully continuing military operations in Iran.
The resolution follows repeated efforts by the House of Representatives to curtail the administration’s military campaign in Iran. Lawmakers passed war-powers resolutions in June and July, urging the president to end US hostilities with Tehran.
The resolution states that Hegseth carried out orders to continue the operations despite Congress’s constitutional authority over war and its votes to end the conflict.
He said Hegseth’s actions “impeded Congress’s ability to exercise its most important constitutional responsibility” and allowed an “illegal war” to continue.
“In all these cases, Secretary Hegseth has acted in a manner that conflicts with the trust placed in him as Secretary of Defense,” Massie said on the House floor.
The eight-article resolution also accuses Hegseth of unauthorized military actions in Venezuela and Yemen, including an operation to capture then-Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
House Democrats had earlier, in April, introduced six articles for Hegseth’s removal, including charges related to the war in Iran.
The House must consider Massie’s resolution within two working days, although Republican leaders could seek to prevent it from being taken up.
