Vilnius — Lithuania tests Ukraine’s “Sky Fortress” system for detecting drones
Vilnius, October 2 /ATSH-DPA/ — Lithuania is testing a Ukrainian-built airspace surveillance system designed to help detect drone threats, Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas announced today.
“Air threats are changing rapidly, so we are also adapting our solutions. Instead of developing everything from scratch, we are adapting systems that are already used in Ukraine”, Kaunas said in a statement.
Ukraine, which is in the fifth year of its war against Russia’s full-scale invasion, is considered one of the most advanced countries in the world in the use of drones in warfare.
According to the Lithuanian authorities, the “Sky Fortress” system uses artificial intelligence to detect and track low-flying drones, as well as cruise missiles.
The system identifies objects based on their acoustic or electromagnetic signatures, on the sounds and signals they emit.
The Ministry of Defence said the system can determine in real time what type of object has been detected.
During the war in Ukraine, several drone incidents have occurred in Lithuania and in the other two Baltic countries, Estonia and Latvia.
In some cases, Ukrainian drones that had lost their direction, launched from Kyiv to strike targets in northwestern Russia, have entered the airspace of the Baltic countries and crashed.
Drones of Russian origin, which came from the territory of Belarus, have also entered Lithuania’s airspace.
