“Wanted” reveals its first three songs: the new Broadway musical gives a first taste of its score ahead of previews
The new 2026–2027 Broadway theatre season has officially begun, and the first new musical to raise the curtain is “Wanted” — the true story of twin sisters Mary and Martha Clarke, two African-American girls who managed to pass as white and hide in plain sight while they were on the run. The company met the press on 29 September, as Playbill reports, and shared a first taste of the score: three songs, “Prologue”, “Inheritance” and “Under a Different Sun”.
The musical brings the book and lyrics by Angelica Chéri — a direct descendant of the Clarke sisters — the music by Ross Baum and the choreography by Chelsey Arce (known for “Sweeney Todd” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”). The direction is by Obie Award winner and Tony nominee Stevie Walker-Webb.
In the leading roles will be Solea Pfeiffer (Mary Clarke, known from “Hadestown” and “Gatsby: An American Myth”) and Liisi LaFontaine (Martha Clarke, from “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” and “Dreamgirls”), alongside Luke James (Elijah), R&B legend Ledisi (Tallulah Clarke) and Bradley Jaden (Jesse). Aurelia Williams and Awa Sal Secka will play Sissy and Flo, returning from the earlier productions at Paper Mill Playhouse and Signature Theatre.
Under its original title “Gun & Powder”, the musical was staged at Paper Mill Playhouse in the spring of 2024. Now, “Wanted” will begin previews at the James Earl Jones Theatre on 15 October, while the official opening night is set for 8 November — making it the first new show of the 2026–2027 Broadway season.
