Why Rinas Is Now Competing With Romania’s and Bulgaria’s Airports

Over the past eight years (2019–2026), Tirana International Airport has become one of the most visible markers of Albania’s economic and social transformation. Strong passenger growth has put Tirana at the top of the region’s airports for passenger traffic, turning the airport into an important link between Albania and Europe and international markets. Over the last two years, 2024–2025, Rinas has overtaken Serbia’s main airport, Nikola Tesla — serving an economy three times larger than ours — by 8 and 19 percent in passenger volume. This year it is competing with the main airports of Romania and Bulgaria.

This development should not be seen merely as an air-transport statistic. The number of passengers passing through the airport is a direct indicator of Albanians’ growing mobility, the expansion of tourism, more business travel, stronger family ties with the diaspora, and a tighter connection between the Albanian economy and the world.

A visible shift in the Albanian economy

Just a few years ago, in 2018, Tirana airport handled a far more limited volume of travelers. Today the picture has been transformed. More destinations, the entry of low-cost carriers, more frequencies and the expansion of tourism have the airport operating at a far higher intensity. Recent data show rapid traffic growth: in 2025, Tirana International Airport reached around 11.6 million passengers, a volume that placed it among the Balkans’ largest airports by traveler numbers. That growth is especially significant given Albania’s population size. A country of about 2.4 million residents is handling an annual passenger volume several times larger than its resident population — a sign that the airport serves far more than Albanians traveling abroad. A substantial share of traffic is tied to international tourism, the diaspora, and Albania as a travel destination. The expansion of air traffic is closely linked to the transformation of Albanian tourism. The rise in foreign visitors has created huge demand for air transport, while more flights and destinations have made Albania more accessible to European travelers.

The airport as a gateway for the Albanian economy

Tirana airport is increasingly taking on the character of a strategic economic infrastructure. A large airport is not only the place where planes take off and land. It creates an economic ecosystem spanning transport, logistics, hospitality, trade, services, maintenance, security, technology and employment. Growing passenger flows also drive demand for new investment around the airport — a development that can shape the surrounding areas, hotels, service facilities, logistics centers and road infrastructure. One of the most tangible changes is how Albanians connect with Europe and the world: today, traveling to many European cities is faster, more frequent and often more affordable — affecting students, businesses, emigrants, families and tourists. For business, air links matter particularly. A foreign investor who can reach Tirana on a direct flight from a major European hub finds it easier to build and manage economic relations in Albania. The airport, in other words, is not just transport infrastructure; it is a competitive factor for our economy.

Airport growth is one of the changes citizens can perceive directly. It is not an abstract macroeconomic indicator. It shows in the number of destinations, the flow of tourists, the frequency of flights, and the ease of traveling to other countries. In that sense, Tirana International Airport has become a symbol of an Albania more connected to the European and global economy: more people traveling, more tourists arriving, more business links, more international contacts, and an economy more integrated with the rest of Europe. That is why the growth of Tirana International Airport can be considered one of the most tangible transformations of Albania in recent years.
