A cutting tool was being used near the fuel: new details emerge from the Saranda explosion

New details have emerged from the explosion that occurred at midday today at the fuel station in neighbourhood no. 1 in Saranda. The fire service was notified of the incident at 11:55. After arriving at the scene, firefighters found that the fire had been put out by the fuel station’s employees.

According to preliminary data, a worker was operating a cutting tool, a grinder, inside the fuel storage tanks’ premises. Sparks created by the cutting tool ignited the fuel vapours, causing the explosion of the vapour that was outside the tanks. As a result of the explosion, the worker who was carrying out the works inside the tank was injured.

Police and fire services went to the scene, while verifications continue to fully document the circumstances of the incident.
