Al-Khelaifi declares war on FIFA and plans a major revolution
Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of the European Football Clubs (EFC, formerly ECA), announced on Tuesday at the organization’s General Assembly in Copenhagen his intention to create “as soon as possible” a new global club body called “World Football Clubs.”
The proposal was interpreted by some of those present as a kind of unofficial sixth confederation, capable of challenging the power of FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino.
“EFC has become a global network and platform for clubs to connect with anyone. We create benefits for clubs inside and outside Europe. That is why now is the time to create the World Football Clubs,” Al-Khelaifi told the assembly.
The PSG president argued that the EFC’s role goes beyond institutional representation. “The EFC’s role is not only to represent clubs through good governance; we will work harder to give every club the opportunity to succeed. More profits, more ideas, more innovation,” he declared, before pointing to generational change as the driving force behind this transformation.
“Football changes every day. Young people experience football differently from many of us. They move between the physical and digital worlds without seeing any difference,” Al-Khelaifi said.
According to the Reuters agency, the “World Football Clubs” project aims to give clubs a global institutional voice, effectively creating a seventh major body in world football alongside the six continental confederations — although it represents clubs rather than national federations.
