Arrests in Serbia for Tax Fraud and Money Laundering in EXPO 2027 Projects — 28.7 Million Dinars in Fake Invoices
NOVI SAD — The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office of Novi Sad announced today that two people, M.N. and A.M., the responsible persons of the firm “A3 Architects Studio” from Inđija, have been arrested on suspicion of tax fraud, fiscal evasion and money laundering linked to allegedly fictitious works for the specialized exhibition EXPO 2027.
According to the prosecution, from December 2024 to August 2025 they paid a total of 28.7 million dinars to suppliers allegedly for preparing the contents and projects of the EXPO 2027 pavilions. Investigations have shown that these works were never carried out — the payments were made with fictitious invoices.
The responsible persons of the firms that received the payments (N.K., B.T. and another person N.K.) are also suspected of money laundering, while two other suspects are on the run. According to the prosecution, the money then moved through cashless transactions, with no real basis, to the personal account of one of the suspects, to hide its origin.
M.N. and A.M. are also suspected of having used fictitious invoices to baselessly increase business costs and lower taxable profit — the estimated damage to Serbia’s budget is around 8.4 million dinars in unpaid profit tax.
The two arrested were placed in 48-hour detention, after which they will be questioned at the Special Anti-Corruption Department of the Novi Sad Higher Prosecutor’s Office. Criminal proceedings against N.K., B.T. and N.K. are ongoing, while police are also searching for two other suspects.
