“Avengers: Endgame Encore” tops the box office with $26 million — “Resident Evil” second, tight race for third
The re-release of “Avengers: Endgame” under the title “Encore,” from Disney and Marvel Studios, topped the American box office this weekend with $26 million, as TheWrap reports in its weekend coverage. The new version, featuring a modified ending and new post-credits scenes setting up “Avengers: Doomsday,” earned $11.2 million on Friday alone from 3,060 theaters. With this figure, “Avengers: Endgame” reaches $884 million lifetime in the U.S. and around $2.8 billion globally — now within $100 million of “Avatar”‘s all-time worldwide record.
In second place stands Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” (Sony/TriStar), with $23.8 million in its second weekend — a 60% drop from its $60 million opening, but enough to cross $100 million in the U.S. and $200 million worldwide this weekend, according to TheWrap.
The race for third place is very tight: A24’s “Primetime,” starring Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen, has the edge with $8.5 million on opening day and $20.5 million for the weekend from 2,874 theaters — a strong result for a film with a budget of just $15 million. Paramount’s “Heart of the Beast,” starring Brad Pitt, follows closely with $7.4 million on opening day and a projected $20 million for the weekend, despite its $80 million budget.
Meanwhile, DreamWorks’ “Forgotten Island” disappointed with just $11.5 million on opening from 3,548 theaters — one of the weakest openings in DreamWorks history, with $4.3 million on the first day — despite a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating and an A CinemaScore, as TheWrap notes in its weekend analysis.
